Kid Friendly + Grown Up Approved Lunchbox Ideas
September 2nd, 2011 - Real Bread
Now that summer is over, you are probably faced with the daunting task of finding healthy lunchbox meals your children will enjoy. You simply need a selection of healthy ingredients and a dash of childhood creativity to keep lunchboxes fun and your child satisfied.
Choose healthy ingredients
Start with the right ingredients. Stock up on seasonal fruits and vegetables. When fresh is not an option, choose canned or frozen fruits and vegetables that are unsweetened and low in sodium. Capitalize on the protein and nutrients found in milk and meat but limit fat consumption by choosing skim or lean products. Increase fibre intake by ensuring at least half of the grains you choose are whole
grain. COBS Bread offers Higher Fibre bread that has the same flavour and texture as their traditional white loaves but with three times the fibre. COBS Bread also offers a range of breads (white, whole wheat and flax) with chia seeds which add essential fatty acids, fibre and protein along with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.
Make it fun
With a selection of healthy ingredients, it is time to get creative and make a feast for your children’s eyes as well as for their tummy.
- Encourage your children to build their own lunch; silly face sandwiches can be created with raisins, seeds, shredded carrot or cucumber slices.
- Cut sandwiches into interesting shapes using a variety of cookie cutters.
- Add colour to their sandwiches; vibrant green apple slices and bright red cranberry sauce dress up a turkey sandwich.
- Delight your children with a selection of cubed vegetables, fruits, breads and cheeses. Use skewers and alternate ingredients to create mini kabobs.
- Use a variety of bread types for sandwiches; there are lots of options to choose from. At COBS Bread, you can find Higher Fibre hamburger and hotdog buns as well as CHIA White and Whole Wheat buns, baps and sliders.
Creating healthy lunchbox meals is not hard but it does take extra thought and planning. Start by choosing the right ingredients and then get creative; you and your child will be pleasantly surprised! Here are some recipies to get you started!
